Nothing makes us happier than knowing our animals have found love and companionship with their new families. And often, adopters get in touch weeks or months later to let us knowhow they’re doing – something we like to call “Furever Home Updates.”
Here are four stories of animals that have found a better future through adoption:
Scout
Scout’s previous owner didn’t properly care for him and the other dogs he lived with. He’d lived outside for most of his life, and he needed to adjust to living indoors. We recommended that his new home didn’t have cats or small animals. And if there was another dog, the two would need a proper introduction to ensure they got along.
Scout lived at the HBSPCA for more than 100 days before his first adoption application. He also went on two weeklong “vacations” at foster homes, where his temporary parents gave him great reports.
Finally, Scout found his Furever Home in early December. He even has a new sibling – a female dog named Mellow, who was adopted from the HBSPCA in March 2024.
“He and Mellow have been co-existing peacefully! She will prompt him to play here and there but he just walks away from her at this point. I’m hoping as he gets more comfortable that his playful side will start to come out too. He seems comfortable, though, and happy (lots of tail wagging!)” wrote Scout’s family.
“He loves his crate – he sleeps all night there with the door open and even will go in during the day when he wants a rest. But also has a little spot near the front door that he’ll lay on, a carpet I put down for him.”
"Baroon", now Grimm
Grimm’s previous owner wasn’t able to care for him and surrendered him to the HBSPCA in July 2024. We named him Baroon and started the search for his new home. He was quickly adopted but returned a week later because he was “too clingy.”
Two weeks later, in August 2024, Baroon found his Furever Home. His new adopters instantly loved him and renamed him Grimm.
They sent this update:
“Grimm is doing fantastic – within two weeks of being home with us, he was completely weaned from anxiety meds. He has zero behaviour issues. Grimm loves to sit and watch birds, squirrels, and butterflies. Every single window in this house now has a perch for him and a view of a bird feeder.”
They added that Grimm also loves sitting on a kitchen stool and watches as the family cooks and bakes. “The second he hears the pantry open, he comes and assumes his position,” they said.
“I can’t believe he was surrendered for being too clingy and running between legs. He’s so calm. I honestly think he gets sick of us being too ‘clingy.’ He is a curious boy who often gets the zoomies. Grimm also loves to play pass –rolling a ball back and forth to you – it’s wild.”
Birthday Cake was one of 39 cats living in a single home. When she came to us in the fall, her gums were swollen and infected, and it was painful for her to eat. She needed a full-mouth extraction to remove her all teeth and their roots.
Birthday Cake recovered well in foster care and transitioned to a soft food diet. She was adopted in early December 2024. Her new family sent an update to say that she has adjusted to her new home and is doing well.
“She was very shy the first night, as expected. When we started cooking the following night, she tried to leave the room we set her up in. It seemed like she really wanted to explore” they wrote.
“She also started rubbing against our legs and is purring a lot. We’re so proud that she’s being so bold so quickly. She has the quite the appetite and seems to be using the litter box regularly...We’re very happy to have her as a part of our family.”
"Pips", now Denver
Pips came to us from Six Nations in July 2024 when his previous owner could no longer care for him and his littermate. He was about two or three months old and immediately went into foster care. After being neutered, he was ready for adoption.
Two weeks later, Pips found his new home. His parents sent an update along with photos of the newest member of their family.
“Pips has been renamed Denver and is a very happy boy!” they wrote. “He is growing so fast, has lost all of his baby teeth, and is starting to get his adult teeth. He loves car rides, hikes and the beach! Thanks again for choosing us for him. He has made our lives so much brighter!”
