Community Cat Education and Trapping Lead

Community cats can be found just about every place people live. These outdoor, free-roaming cats live in and are cared for by community members—hence the term “Community Cats.” The greatest problem facing community cat populations is unchecked reproduction. One breeding pair of cats can theoretically result in over 11 million cats in a 9-year period.

TNVR stands for “trap-neuter-vaccinate-return.” It is the most humane method for reducing unowned cat populations while simultaneously providing an opportunity to attend to minor medical concerns. TNVR is effective at reducing community cat populations—the higher the rate of sterilization in a colony, the greater the impact a TNVR program will have over time.

TNVR also results in a reduction of “nuisance” behaviors associated with mating, such as fighting and yowling. Spaying and neutering can prevent certain medical conditions, such as pyometra (infection of the uterus) and several types of cancer, while increasing a cat’s overall lifespan. Altering male cats reduces the odor associated with the urine of intact males.

Want to make the lives better for Community Cats in Hamilton?

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Work with registered colony caregivers to establish a feeding pattern, count the cats, and set out shelters and feeding stations.
  • Educate communities on the benefits of TNVR and how it will make their community cats healthier and happier.
  • Humanely trap unaltered cats.
  • Bring trapped cats into the HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital, where they are sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, ear-tipped, and treated for minor ailments.
  • Assist in the care of cats for 24-48 hours as they recover in the onsite HBSPCA recovery center.
  • After recovery, return cats to their environment and release them.
  • Maintain our 100-trap bank by tracking traps.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Experience with community engagement and volunteers.
  • Experience working with Community Cats or wildlife.
  • Rabies vaccination preferred.
