A Career with the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA

The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) is always Pet First. Since 1887, we've advanced the humane treatment of animals through innovative and collaborative education, services, and partnerships. Our diverse programs support over one million animal interactions annually and provide vital resources to ensure the well-being of animals and their families in our community. We take care of animals because they take care of us.

A career with HBSPCA is a joint commitment to our business and our animals. We champion innovative programs across our community, and we're always moving fast. We're looking for strategic thinkers, animal lovers, and get-it-done teammates, to help us build the next decade of our Animal Welfare Charity. Your passion and commitment to our shared cause will rejuvenate our mission daily. You’ll perform well in a role at HBSPCA if you thrive working with ambiguity, are self-directed and motivated, willing to wear multiple hats and jump in to solve problems that may be unrelated to your direct role, and able to operate on-the-ground while planning ahead strategically.

Please visit www.hbspca.com, or our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to learn more.

About You

The selected candidate for the Logistics Coordinator role is a self-starter, eager to lead a team of volunteers, and organized in their approach. You can think on your feet, proactively respond to customer communications, listen to volunteer needs, and align resources with program demands.

You can operate on the day-to-day level, making return calls and emails, and door-to-door delivery, to customers while carving out space for ‘the bigger picture’- to brainstorm and experiment with ways of executing your role, and the program, more efficiently. You’re someone who puts a high degree of thoughtfulness and attention to detail as you carefully craft communications and strategies to support dynamic customer needs.

You understand that nothing is ‘beneath you’ and you're part of a team of owners. Everyone takes pride in getting the job done and delivering the best possible experience to the people and pets we serve.

You thrive in a fast-paced environment, where deadlines are often conflicting, and a re-balancing of priorities is a daily exercise. You operate well under pressure, collaborate with a high degree of effectiveness, and can appreciate and operate within your role while recognizing how it overlaps and aligns with others across the organization.

This role is right for you if…

  • You are willing to be on the road making deliveries to customers
  • You enjoy working with and supporting volunteers
  • You enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate your success by numbers and value
  • You are an idea person, creative and responsive
  • You like to be on your feet and active, more than sitting in a chair
  • You thrive in environments where you can create efficiencies
  • You enjoy customer service and communications
  • You like to work in a small team and execute great results

If this sounds like you, please continue to read on to learn more about this opportunity.

Community Cat Education and Trapping Lead

Community cats can be found just about every place people live. These outdoor, free-roaming cats live in and are cared for by community members—hence the term “Community Cats.” The greatest problem facing community cat populations is unchecked reproduction. One breeding pair of cats can theoretically result in over 11 million cats in a 9-year period.

TNVR stands for “trap-neuter-vaccinate-return.” It is the most humane method for reducing unowned cat populations while simultaneously providing an opportunity to attend to minor medical concerns. TNVR is effective at reducing community cat populations—the higher the rate of sterilization in a colony, the greater the impact a TNVR program will have over time.

TNVR also results in a reduction of “nuisance” behaviors associated with mating, such as fighting and yowling. Spaying and neutering can prevent certain medical conditions, such as pyometra (infection of the uterus) and several types of cancer, while increasing a cat’s overall lifespan. Altering male cats reduces the odor associated with the urine of intact males.

Want to make the lives better for Community Cats in Hamilton?

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Work with registered colony caregivers to establish a feeding pattern, count the cats, and set out shelters and feeding stations.
  • Educate communities on the benefits of TNVR and how it will make their community cats healthier and happier.
  • Humanely trap unaltered cats.
  • Bring trapped cats into the HBSPCA Companion Animal Hospital, where they are sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, ear-tipped, and treated for minor ailments.
  • Assist in the care of cats for 24-48 hours as they recover in the onsite HBSPCA recovery center.
  • After recovery, return cats to their environment and release them.
  • Maintain our 100-trap bank by tracking traps.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Experience with community engagement and volunteers.
  • Experience working with Community Cats or wildlife.
  • Rabies vaccination preferred.

Working at the HBSPCA:

  • We are a growing team of animal lovers.
  • We get things done at a fast pace and love tackling new and exciting ideas.
  • We believe in empowering people—we want to empower you to do your job and watch you lead your team.
